Washington Services, A1(M)

Washington is the northernmost service area on the A1(M), just short of where the motorway ends. How is it laid out, and what comes after it?

Where it is

Washington services is on the A1(M) between Junction 64, the A195 for Washington and Birtley, and Junction 65, where the motorway ends at Birtley. Unlike the other A1(M) service areas it is not at a junction: you reach it from the main carriageway, and it serves both directions.

Traffic past the services

This is one of the busiest parts of the northern A1(M). The Department for Transport counted 92,444 vehicles a day between Junctions 64 and 65 in 2025, and 91,500 between Junctions 63 and 64. Only 6.8% are lorries — the lowest share north of Hertfordshire — as car traffic grows around Washington, Chester-le-Street and Gateshead while the number of lorries stays much the same.
