Three kinds of works
Overnight closures — jobs that need a carriageway empty, normally between late evening and early morning. The same entries appear on A1(M) closures tonight.
Lane closures — cones across one or more lanes for a shift while traffic uses the rest of the carriageway.
Longer schemes — weeks-long works, usually with lanes narrowed and a reduced limit that is enforced like any other; current limits are on the A1(M) speed limits page.
Where works bite hardest on the A1(M)
The Department for Transport road traffic statistics, 2025, put the heaviest A1(M) traffic just after the M1 merges in: 142,783 vehicles a day between Junctions 43 and 44, and 109,039 between 44 and 45. The Hertfordshire section peaks at 93,845 between Junctions 8 and 9. Those are the A1(M) stretches where one coned-off lane affects the most drivers.
The Doncaster Bypass, Junctions 34 to 38, is a different case. It has two lanes each way rather than three, and lorries are about 17% to 18% of its traffic, so it pays to look at works there before a journey past Doncaster.
North of the M1 merge the freight share climbs further. Past Wetherby, between Junctions 45 and 46, lorries are 20.9% of all traffic. See A1(M) lorry and freight traffic.
Works on the A1 either side
Works on the plain A1 between the motorway sections are not on this list. The Black Cat roundabout, where the A421 meets the A1 south of St Neots, is being rebuilt as a three-level junction due in spring 2027; reports for that stretch are on A1 traffic news.
