    Where the A1 is not a motorway

    The A1 runs from London to Edinburgh. Four stretches of it in England are motorway, the A1(M), and have their own news on the latest A1(M) traffic news page. Everywhere else it is the plain A1:

    England only

    The A1 crosses into Scotland at Marshall Meadows, north of Berwick, and ends in Edinburgh, at Princes Street by Waverley station. National Highways covers England, so this page stops at the border. For the whole route, stretch by stretch, see the A1 route guide.

    Roads that cross the A1

    Several of the A1’s junctions are where drivers switch to the M1: the A421 at the Black Cat, the A14 at Brampton, the A43 at Stamford, the A52 at Grantham and the A57 at Apleyhead. The A1(M) and M1 link roads page lists them all. For news on those A-roads themselves, see Traffic News England.

    Changes coming

    The Black Cat roundabout is being replaced by a three-level junction, due in spring 2027. Reports for works there appear on this page.

    Reading the list

    Each card gives the place, the direction and what has been reported, with the time it was last updated and, where one is given, the expected end time. Places on the plain A1 are named rather than numbered, because the A1 has no motorway junction numbers. For how busy the road is, see A1 traffic statistics.

    A1Mtraffic.co.uk is dedicated to the A1(M) and the A1 in England, from London to the Scottish border. The parallel motorway is covered by M1 Traffic; at Junction 1 the A1(M) meets the orbital, covered by M25 Traffic.
