A1(M) Junctions 34 to 38: the Doncaster Bypass
The Doncaster Bypass runs 15.13 miles from Blyth, in the far north of Nottinghamshire, to Skellow in South Yorkshire. It opened in 1961 and is one of the oldest motorway sections in Britain. Reports for this section are shown below.

The junctions on this section
- Junction 34, Blyth — the A614 for Bawtry and the A631 for Gainsborough, with Blyth services. South of here the road is the A1.
- Junction 35 — the M18, which is the M18’s own Junction 2. It leads west to the M1 for Sheffield, and north-east to the M180 for Scunthorpe and the M62 for Hull.
- Junction 36 — the A630 for Rotherham and Doncaster.
- Junction 37 — the A635 for Doncaster and Barnsley.
- Junction 38, Skellow — the A638 for Wakefield, northbound only. The motorway ends and the A1 continues north towards Darrington.
Two lanes, lots of lorries
Unlike most of the A1(M), the Doncaster Bypass has two lanes in each direction. It also carries a heavy share of freight: lorries are about 17% to 18% of traffic on every stretch, and between Junctions 35 and 37 more than 15,000 lorries a day.

The M18 changes the road. South of Junction 35 the count is 55,811; north of it, 86,982, as traffic to and from the M1 and M180 joins. The Department for Transport records the Junction 34 to 35 stretch at two count points with the same figure, shown once here. Between Junctions 37 and 38 a second count point records 77,019.
Sheffield and the M1
This is the first place north of the M25 where the A1(M) and the M1 are joined by another motorway. From Junction 35 the M18 runs west to the M1 at its Junction 32, the usual way between the A1(M) and Sheffield.
