Why the A1(M) closes at night
Some jobs can only be done with a carriageway or slip road empty of traffic, and National Highways normally books those for the night. On a motorway that carries 142,783 vehicles a day between Junctions 43 and 44, the small hours are when a shut carriageway disrupts the fewest journeys.
What an entry shows
- The carriageway that is shut, and the junctions either side of it.
- Whether the closure is on the main line or only on a slip road.
- Start and finish times, as National Highways has set them out.
- Any diversion route that has been given.
Overnight jobs sometimes end ahead of time and sometimes run late, so check the list again just before you leave.
Closures and the gaps in the motorway
A closure near the end of a section can push you onto the plain A1 sooner than you expected. The motorway sections end at Junction 10 (Stotfold), Junction 17 (Peterborough), Junction 38 (Skellow) and Junction 65 (Birtley), and begin again at Junctions 14, 34 and 40. Slip roads worth checking
If the slip road you need is shut, that closure matters to you as much as a full carriageway one. On the A1(M), look for entries at the junctions that link to other main roads: Junction 1 for the M25, Junction 35 for the M18, Junctions 40 and 41 for the M62, Junction 43 where the M1 joins, Junction 44 for the A64 to York, Junction 53 for the A66 at Scotch Corner and Junction 57 for the A66(M) to Darlington.
