What the signs are for
Message signs warn A1(M) drivers of what is coming: a closed lane, queues beyond the next junction, a closure booked for tonight, or a general safety reminder. Looking through them before a long A1(M) trip can warn you of trouble on the section you are heading for.
Common messages
- Lane closed — change lanes early; works or an obstruction lie ahead.
- Queue ahead — expect slow traffic beyond the next junction.
- A date or “closed overnight” — advance warning of a planned closure; the detail is on A1(M) closures tonight.
- A red X — the lane beneath it is shut and must not be used.
Signs before a decision point
A sign matters most where you can still change route. On the A1(M) those places are:
- Junction 1, the M25 at South Mimms.
- Junction 9, the A505 towards Luton.
- Junction 35, the M18 towards the M1, the M180 and the M62.
- Junctions 40 and 41, the M62 at Ferrybridge.
- Junction 44, the A64 for York.
- Junction 53, the A66 at Scotch Corner.
