Washington services sits between Junctions 64 and 65 and serves both directions.
Why the numbers jump
The A1(M) is four motorway sections of the A1. Where the road is ordinary A1, the junctions are not part of the motorway list, so there are no A1(M) Junctions 11 to 13, 18 to 33 or 39. The Wikipedia junction table used for this page also has no Junctions 54 or 55: after Scotch Corner at Junction 53 the next is Junction 56 at Barton.
Junctions worth knowing
- Junction 1 is the M25’s Junction 23. For the orbital, see M25 Traffic.
- Junction 9 is the A505, the route the airport itself suggests from the A1(M); see Luton Airport from the A1(M).
- Junction 35 is the M18, which is also the M18’s Junction 2. The M18 leads to the M1 for Sheffield and to the M180 and M62.
- Junction 43 is where the M1 ends and joins the A1(M). Heading south you can leave here for the M1 and Leeds; the M1’s own last junction is its Junction 48. See the A1(M) and M1 link roads.
- Junction 65 at Birtley is the end of the A1(M). The A1 carries on as the Gateshead and Newcastle Western Bypass.
Part junctions
Several junctions do not allow every movement. Junctions 2, 5, 38, 40, 43 and 57 are part junctions: Junction 5 has no slips southbound and only an entry slip northbound, Junction 38 has an exit northbound only, where the motorway ends, and Junction 43 can only be used to leave southbound or join northbound. Check the direction before relying on one.
